Driving tomorrow: 5 futuristic car features we’re excited about

When I learnt to drive, it was ‘three on the tree, four on the floor’. These days, adaptive cruise control and lane-assist technology are standard features, both of which sound like ideas of science-fiction to my 16 year old self! At Cox Auto, we love a great piece of automotive engineering—especially when it pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. While flying cars might still be the stuff of sci-fi, there are plenty of exciting innovations on the horizon that are set to change the way we drive. The future of driving is here. Here are five futuristic car features that aren’t just wishful thinking—they’re well on their way.

Back to the future of driving.

1. Autonomous driving that actually works

Self-driving cars have been in development for years, but they’re not quite at the level of “sit back and let the car do it all” just yet. That said, advancements in AI, sensors, and machine learning mean that fully autonomous vehicles are getting closer to reality. Expect to see improved driver-assist technology first—think smarter adaptive cruise control, self-parking that works every time, and even limited hands-free highway driving. The goal? Safer roads and stress-free commutes.

2. Augmented reality windscreens

Heads-up displays (HUDs) have been around for a while, but the next generation is going full sci-fi. Augmented reality windscreens will overlay navigation, speed limits, and hazard warnings directly onto the glass, helping drivers process information without taking their eyes off the road. Picture turn-by-turn directions appearing as if they’re painted on the street ahead—the future of driving no longer requires you to glance down at a screen. We may even get to a point where the view ahead is simulated when reality is encased in fog.

3. Cars that talk to each other

Imagine your car warning  and responding to a hazard or change in traffic conditions before you even see it. Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication is an emerging technology that allows cars to share data with each other and with traffic infrastructure. This could mean real-time traffic updates, early alerts for road hazards, and smoother intersections with fewer red-light runners. As smart city technology advances, C-V2X could make driving not only safer but more efficient. Early trials here in Victoria surfaced some challenges related to standardisation, infrastructure, and the need for widespread adoption to fully realise the safety and efficiency benefits—but hey, that’s for smarter minds than mine to solve!

4. Eco-friendly materials, energy efficiency and smart roads

The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is just the beginning. The future of driving features cars with lightweight, sustainable materials like plant-based plastics and recycled carbon fibre to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Plus, advances in battery technology could mean longer ranges, faster charging, and even solar panels integrated into car bodies to generate extra power on the go. Researchers and engineers are even working on developing new road surface technologies that can self-repair (bye, bye, potholes!). Meanwhile in Sweden, a trip down the aptly named EVolution Road—a kilometre-long stretch of electrified roadway—can charge your electric vehicle on the move via conductive technology.

5. Biometric access and personalised driving experiences

Can’t find your keys? Say goodbye to keys and fobs—future cars may recognise you through fingerprint scanners, facial recognition, or even voice commands. Beyond just unlocking the doors, biometric systems could automatically adjust your seat, mirrors, and climate settings as soon as you hop in. For shared vehicles, this means a seamless, personalised experience no matter who’s behind the wheel.
