A family legacy

When Ashley’s father opened the doors of Cox Auto on Montague Street in South Melbourne in 1981, it was a one-man operation. Now, 37 years on and occupying both the iconic original workshop and larger premises across the road, it’s fair to say that much has changed. From the cars themselves (today’s SUVs are a long way from the mid-size sedans of the 1980s, afterall!) to the size of the team, Ashley now leads a true 21st century operation. What remains is a commitment to quality workmanship and the kind of customer service you remember with a smile: a true family legacy.

Locals still remember Ashley as a young fella helping his dad out in the workshop, and fondly recall always being well looked after. Like his father, Ashley “doesn’t spend your money like it’s torn-up newspapers”; every car that comes into the Cox Auto workshop is cared for as though it were their own. Each member of the team – from the service adviser who takes your booking and greets you on arrival, to the technician who keeps your car running smoothly – is dedicated to providing you with a quality of personalised service unmatched by dealerships.

These days it’s Ashley’s young family – a daughter and two sons – ‘lending a hand’ in the workshop, and the future looks bright. But the Cox Auto family is now a broader team, and Ashley has pride in each and every one of his team of service advisers and technicians. “It’s amazing to see them grow”, he says as he speaks of the thirst for learning and continual improvement he sees in his team.
